How long have you worked at Barton?
14 years.
Where were you employed before working for Barton Community College?
I worked as a teller at a bank.
Why did you choose to work at Barton?
I started working here part time when I was still a student. The person that had my job back then suggested that I look into a secretary job that was open at the time, and I thought it would be a good opportunity to get my foot in the door.
What’s your favorite part about your job?
I really enjoy getting to know my students on a personal level because I get to kind of see how what they’re learning fits into their life. It’s cool to see them change and evolve and become who they want to be.
What is the most challenging part?
Trying to stay current with workforce trends is sometimes challenging. I really feel that it’s important to keep implementing new things in the classroom to ensure that students will be up to speed with what is current and relevant when they go out into the workforce.
What projects are you most excited about in the coming year?
We are going to start utilizing some of our current students as mentors to prospective students. I’ve tried it recently and it worked out very well. I think it helps prospective students to be able to talk to a peer about any questions they may have about our programs at Barton.
How do you spend time outside of work?
Shopping, traveling, spending time with family, party planning, and recently spending time on Pinterest, which is a huge guilty pleasure because I should be doing other things!
What is something people might not know about you?
I’m an only child, and I grew up on a farm. We had all kinds of farm animals, and I used to go coyote hunting with my dad and our greyhounds when I was still in a car seat!
Are you excited for the Super Bowl?
Kind of. I’m more into college sports, but I have been watching the playoffs and will watch the Super Bowl.
Favorite Super Bowl party food?
Gosh, it’s been a long time since I’ve been to one. That’s what happens when you have kids!
I do love that kind of food though. I’d have to say 7-layer dip.
A lot of people say the best part of watching the Super Bowl is watching the commercials. Do you agree? Do you think they are getting better or worse?
I wouldn’t say it’s the best part, but it’s one of the best. I think overall they’ve gotten worse over the years. There’s just not as much of a buzz about them anymore.
Madonna is performing at half-time. Thoughts on that?
It doesn’t disappointment me completely, but at the same time I’m not jumping up and down. I didn’t really follow her newer stuff, but I was a Madonna fan when she was popular back in the 80’s.
If you could pick the halftime performer, who would you pick?
Well, I’m kind of a rock and roll girl. I would choose Chris Cornell (because I love his voice), Aerosmith, Adam Levine from Maroon 5 and Daughtry.
I think I’ll tack a few completely random questions onto the end of this interview. Is that ok with you?
Yes. Go right ahead.
Do you have a smartphone?
Yes.
How has it changed your life?
Always having access to the internet is handy. I can always check my email if I want to, and I also use the GPS feature sometimes.
What is one app you can’t live without?
ScoreMobile. I can check scores and stats at any time. It’s awesome.
If you could have one store brought to the Great Bend area, what would it be?
Ann Taylor. Anybody who knows me well enough will read this and roll their eyes! I love Ann Taylor.
If you could have one restaurant brought to the Great Bend area, what would it be?
It’s a toss-up. PF Chang’s or Olive Garden.
